Evergreen is here!

The new C/W MARS circulation system/catalog went live on Tuesday, May 29. As with all transitions, there have been a few glitches. Please bear with us as we try to get them sorted out.

If you are having trouble logging into your record in the catalog, please try entering your library card number as your username and your last name (all in caps) as your password. You will have the opportunity to change your password once you have logged in. If you are still having trouble, give us a call, and we will try to assist you.

Thanks to all our patrons for your patience while we learn this new system.

Tuesday, May 29

To better prepare for serving patrons with the new Evergreen system, the library will remain closed until 5pm on Tuesday, May 29. This will give staff an opportunity to work with the system so we can better answer your questions about the new look and function of the catalog. We look forward to seeing you from 5-8pm that day.

Beginning Tuesday, May 29, you will be able log in to our brand-new catalog using your library card number and your last name all in caps. You will get the opportunity to change your password/PIN after you have logged in the first time.

Evergreen is coming!

Over the next few weeks, Greenfield Public Library will be moving to a new open-source circulation system called Evergreen.

The change is part of a system-wide transition that will provide better service for library patrons at less cost.

There will, however, be some changes that will affect patrons. Some of those changes will be temporary, and others will be long-term.

The actual transition is scheduled to take place over Memorial Day Weekend, during which the library will be closed. However, because the current system will be taken offline, patrons will not be able to access their records during that time.

If all goes well the transition will be complete by the time the library opens on Tuesday, May 29th. However, if the process does not go as planned and the new system is not up on the 29th, patrons will have to have their library cards with them in order to check out. It will not be possible to look up patrons by name. Patrons who have lost their cards may get replacement cards at no charge before the system goes down on May 25th. Replacement cards normally cost $2.

The Evergreen system has several advantages for patrons. Patrons will be able to set the location for all of their holds to be delivered to, so if you want them to go to the town you work in rather than the town you live it, you can make that your official pick-up location.

Patrons will also be able to suspend their holds if they are going away so that the item they are waiting for does not arrive while they are gone.

Building an Energy Efficient Home

Chris Capello and Lance Hodges of Comfort Zones Homes will present a talk on Tuesday, May 29 at 6:30pm on the principles of constructing an energy independent or 'net zero' home.

Net-zero homes are designed to have annual energy costs of $0 for heat, hot water, appliances, and lighting, and rely on super-insulation and solar energy.

A question-and-answer session will follow. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, go to www.netzerobuilder.com.

E-readers are here!

The library now has four Sony Readers available for borrowing at the circulation desk! Each reader comes pre-loaded with 68 works of classic literature. Take one home to see how they work, or borrow a book from the Digital Catalog.

For information on borrowing one of the GPL's readers, see our E-readers policy page.

Book Launch Party

The GPL’s own Jane Buchanan will launch her new picture book, Seed Magic, at the library on Saturday, April 28 at 1pm in the LeVanway Meeting Room. Jane will read her book aloud, give a short talk and answer questions from the audience, and then guests will be invited to enjoy refreshments and make bird feeders with Lori Gordon.

This free program is open to the public thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the GPL. The event will take place after regular library hours and guests should enter at the back door to access the meeting room. For further information contact Kay Lyons at (413) 772-1544 ext. 5.

The Friends are raffling off a classic Northeastern painted birdhouse. It is made of long lasting weather resistant western cedar. Additionally, it has a stained and sealed western cedar shingled roof. It is the type of birdhouse a Chickadee, Wren or Nuthatch would find attractive. The front opens for easy cleaning. This adorable birdhouse is on display at the library. Tickets are $1.00 each and the drawing will take place on May 5th at the Friends Book and Plant Sale. All proceeds benefit the Greenfield Public Library.
