The Greenfield Public Library serves as a public center for enrichment, entertainment, access to technology, self-directed learning and the exploration of ideas. The Library serves all members of the community, regardless of age, income, education, religious or political beliefs and makes no judgment on the nature of individual inquiry.
After many years in the historic Leavitt-Hovey House, which was built in 1797 and designed by Asher Benjamin (the writer of the first architectural pattern book published in America), GPL moved next door to a brand new building. The July 13, 2023 grand opening was attended by over 500 people, with over 1,000 visiting the library on its first day alone.
On Monday, July 28, 2025, the library was awarded LEED Certification at the Silver Level. LEED is the most widely recognized green building rating system in the world. LEED certification offers a framework for healthy, efficient, and cost-effective green buildings, providing environmental and social benefits. It serves as a globally recognized symbol of sustainability leadership, supported by a committed community of organizations and individuals driving market transformation (US Green Building Council).
